St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation Announces Leadership Transition and Search for New President and CEO

Montréal, Québec – March 17, 2025 – After 25 years of extraordinary leadership and dedication, Cynda Heward, President and CEO of St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation, has announced her retirement.

As the leader of the philanthropic arm of St. Mary’s Hospital Centre – a vital community-based hospital – Cynda has been instrumental in shaping the Foundation’s success, fostering deep connections with the Board of Directors, donors, corporate partners, the Board of Governors, the Auxiliary, the Hospital, and volunteers. Known for her big smile, boundless energy, and open-hearted leadership, she has built a culture of generosity, collaboration, and innovation that has profoundly impacted patient care and medical excellence.

A Legacy of Leadership and Impact

Under Cynda’s leadership, the Foundation has:

  • Raised over $125 million to bridge the gap between government healthcare funding and the hospital’s needs, ensuring state-of-the-art equipment, medical research, and enhanced patient care.
  • Launched and led the $100 million Century of Care Campaign, a transformational initiative marking the hospital’s 100-year anniversary, ensuring future generations receive the highest standard of care.
  • Inspired a dynamic and engaged donor community, making St. Mary’s Foundation a model for philanthropy-driven healthcare impact.
  • Expanded and strengthened flagship fundraising events such as the St. Mary’s Ball, Golf Tournament, and Girls for the Cure, inspiring unparalleled donor engagement.
  • Empowered and mentored a high-performing Foundation team, fostering a culture of growth, collaboration, and strong retention, ensuring long-term organizational sustainability.
  • Brought spirit and warmth to the walls of St. Mary’s Hospital, creating a sense of community through celebrations, gatherings, pop-up shops, and initiatives that uplifted patients, staff, and visitors alike.

While these accomplishments define much of Cynda’s impact, her true legacy lies in the relationships she built, the culture she nurtured, and the profound sense of belonging she inspired at St. Mary’s.

A Thoughtful Leadership Transition

Cynda has been an exceptional leader whose passion and commitment have transformed the Foundation and elevated St. Mary’s Hospital’s ability to provide outstanding care,” said Arthur Wechsler, Chair of the Board of Directors. “Her ability to connect with people, inspire generosity, and lead with authenticity has left a lasting impact on all of us. We are deeply grateful for her contributions.

To ensure a seamless leadership transition, the Board of Directors has established a President and CEO Search Committee and will retain an executive search firm to conduct a broad and strategic recruitment process.
