Walk to Raise Awareness & Funds for Women-Related Cancers

With the fiercest dedication to their cause, this powerful female movement made a triumphant return to Percival Molson Memorial Stadium to unite in a true showing of strength and celebration.

As many as 1,200 girls worked diligently in the weeks leading up to the event, gathering pledges from friends and family to enable their participation in a 5k trek through the streets and over the mountain. Students from Miss Edgar’s and Miss Cramp’s School (ECS), Lower Canada College (LCC), Sacred Heart School of Montréal, The Study and Trafalgar School for Girls all took part – raising a remarkable $162,852 NET dedicated to cancer treatments and services at St. Mary’s Hospital Centre.

The students rushed into the stadium, over the pink carpet and onto the field as Virgin Radio’s Vinny Barrucco greeted each school with shout-outs of massive enthusiasm. Acting as MC for the event, Vinny was joined throughout by DJ Fafa Khan who kept the crowd pumped!

Other highlights included participation from CTV’s Lori Graham who broadcast live weather over the noon hour and also delivered a big congratulations for the girls efforts, an impactful testimonial speech by breast cancer survivor Alexandra Feldman who instilled the importance of self-examination and abdicating for your own health as well as a special visit from long-time St. Mary’s Foundation and Governing Board member Rachel Renaud.

Making her first appearance at Girls for the Cure was Montréal singer/songwriter VËR who captured the audience with her vocal talents, felled a hush over the crowd for a moment of silence, then delivered an emotional rendition of Sarah McLachlan’s “I Will Remember You” for those women who have gone before us, those who are fighting and those who have won.

St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation President and CEO, Cynda Heward, called the Foundation staff up on stage to help reveal the giant cheque with this year’s results!

It takes a community… We extend our sincerest gratitude to all the dedicated teachers for their enthusiasm and to Eyal Baruch and his wonderful McGill team at Molson Stadium. Thank you as well to our supporters; Bell Canada, J. Sonic, Lorena & Norman Cook, Bell Media, DoughNats, CA LEM, La Grande Roue de Montréal, La Ronde, and Million Carpets and Tiles.

Congratulations to all the students for their passion and dedication that has raised over $3.6 million dollars over the years in support of awareness, research, treatment and survival rates for women fighting cancer.

We look forward to seeing you for the 29th edition in 2023!
